Palace On Wheels, one of the leading luxury trains in India left the Safdarjung Railway Station, New Delhi, on 7th September, 2016 heading towards its first royal journey of this season. The Palace on Wheels train coaches are divided into 14 saloons, 2 grand restaurant cars, a lounge bar and a spa car serving the passengers with luxury. Passengers of mixed nationalities boarded this tourist luxury train along with several Indian tourists. The passengers occupied the saloons which are named after the different places of Rajasthan. Each of the carriage has a carriage captain and a butler to assist and serve the passengers efficiently.
Two of our valued guests: Mr. Hamad A S M S Alajmi and Ms. Alanoud A S M S Alajmi were on-board this royal journey to experience the lavishness on the go. They received a warm traditional welcome of Floral garland and tikka on reaching the station. They undergo this tradition of welcoming the guests in every subsequent station and off the train restaurants. They were entertained by the band as they were waiting in the station for the welcome ceremony and boarding formalities.
They were accommodated by a cabin (bedroom) with plush carpets and well equipped attached bathroom with a decent shower. The beds in the cabin are comfortable. They have been provided with a khidmadgar to assist them. There was a sitting-room in the carriage for them to enjoy their tea and breakfast.
They enjoyed their meals in one of the dining cars named as the Maharaja and Maharani. The guests had a wide option to choose from such as ‘Continental’, ‘Chinese’ or ‘Indian’ food. They could choose any of them or all three of them or any combination and in any quantity. Their train fare included the price of the meals but for the drinks on-board they had to pay extra amount.
The guests did not feel bore on-board as there is a lounge bar on-board, where they relaxed amidst lavishness, read a book or magazine and interacted with their fellow travelers. The guests received a brief about the excitements of their week long journey through the Palace on Wheels train along with a free drink at this lounge. In their leisure time, they experienced ultimate rejuvenation by undertaking exclusive massage treatments on-board, in the luxury ‘spa’ car of the train.
In order to go for off-train excursion, the passengers were accommodated in buses and cars divided into four groups, or teams, to fit into four buses for the daily tours. Surprisingly, the same buses and cars were available for the excursion every morning. Therefore, the guests had a luxurious and well-organized outing through the enchanting destinations of Rajasthan. The first destination of this majestic journey was the Pink City- Jaipur. It is called so as the buildings and the walls are painted pink. Most of the cities of Rajasthan have been different colors because of some sound reason. On reaching the city, the guests received a warm welcome. The sightseeing tour commenced with a visit to the Prince Albert Museum, which was built in the 1876. Then a drive through the ancient Mughal gate took the guests to the old town, where they could admire the pink colored buildings. They were being told by their guide that it is actually a law (buildings and walls should be painted pink), which is required to be followed.
They visited the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds, which was constructed for the royal women to get the views of the city streets from behind the screen or windows. Then they proceeded towards the Jantar Mantar, a royal observatory built in the year 1728 and houses astronomic instruments. The major attraction of this observatory is the sundial, which is said to be the largest in the world.

Then they visited the City Palace, which is situated nearby. It is the place where the royal family of Jaipur still resides. The museum within the palace complex displays two large vessels of pure silver. One of the Maharajas from the royal family used to carry these containers to carry holy water from the river Ganges during his sporting tour. The museum also showcases various other utensils, costumes, weapons used by the royal family along with remarkable art, crafts and paintings of that era.
Later, they visited Amber Fort from there they had a picturesque overview of the city. This well fortified fort with several watch towers was dwelled by the Moghuls and later by the Maharajas. The guests enjoyed a joyful elephant ride to reach the fort. They had a sumptuous lunch while enjoying traditional music there. The insight of the interiors gave them the opportunity to admire the impressive moghul buildings, exquisite carvings and stunning mirror inlays.
After returning back to the city, the guests went for shopping some ethnic jewelry, traditional handicrafts, carpets or fabric and mementos as souvenir from the souvenir car on-board. They then returned back at the comfort of the train, get freshened up for drinks and dinner. On the way, they admired the beauty of the royal summer house called Jal Mahal, which was used by the Maharajas and their families for summer retreat.
After a thorough visit of the pink city, the luxury train carried the guests to their next destination, Sawai Madhopur. They had the opportunity to watch wildlife during their safari at Ranthambore National Park. After enjoying a royal breakfast at the forest lodge, they returned back amidst luxury on-board. As the train proceeded towards Chittorgarh, they enjoyed a relishing lunch on-board. Then after, they went for an excursion to Chittorgarh Fort (off the train). In the evening, they witnessed the light and sound show, while they were enjoying refreshments at the fort’s cafeteria.
As they were moving towards the lake city – Udaipur, they enjoyed a hearty breakfast on-board. The guests then had an off the train city tour. They had a royal lunch at a heritage hotel in the city. After enjoying a joyful ride on a boat in Lake Pichola, they returned back to the Palace On Wheels, where they were served with a lavish dinner, as the train moved towards Jaisalmer.

They relaxed and enjoyed leisure hours and had some rejuvenation at the Spa on-board. On reaching Jaisalmer, they went for a sightseeing tour (off the train). They had the option to enjoy a lavish lunch either on-board the train or at an exclusive hotel. They also had a joyous camel ride in the sand dunes and witnessed a colorful cultural program, while they relished a traditional Rajasthani food at dinner. They returned back to the train and moved towards Jodhpur.
They had a royal breakfast on-board, as they reached Jodhpur. A sightseeing tour was on the cards for them, followed by a lip-smacking lunch on-board or in a deluxe resort. They had a delicious dinner as the train moved to Bharatpur and had a comfortable overnight stay on-board.
They enjoyed bird watching at Keoladeo Ghana National Park, early in the morning at Bharatpur. They had their breakfast at the forest lodge. The train took the guests to Agra, where they enjoyed a city tour. After enjoying a regal lunch either at the finest Agra hotel or on-board the train, they admired the magnificent beauty of the Taj Mahal. They witnessed a light and sound show after taking a stroll in the city market.
